Anaemias (D50-D64) accounted for 211 deaths, or 44% of deaths due to Blood and immunity disorders. While the number of deaths due to Anaemias has remained relatively stable over the last 10 years, Anaemia deaths as a proportion of all Blood and immunity disorders has been steadily falling over the last decade from 53% in 1998 to 44% in 2007. The number of females dying from Anaemias was higher than the number of males dying from the same cause. This pattern has been consistent over the last 14 years.

Egypt, The USA, Mexico and Spain have the highest amount of recorded deaths due to Anaemia, with Egypt having over 500 and the others having just over 100, Australia is 10th in the world with 19 deaths due to the disease.

Anaemia of chronic disease is the second most common type of anaemia, behind only Iron deficiency Anaemia and it may be the most common cause of anaemia for hospitalized patients.

The rates for some conditions are as follows:

  • Up to 95% of patients with an acute or chronic infection;
  • Up to 77% of cancer patients;
  • Up to 81% of people with autoimmune conditions;
  • Up to 70% of patients who have rejection following an organ transplant;
  • Up to 50% of patients with chronic kidney disease and inflammation.
